Udtalelser

Testimonials

In the MICO project, the participants are given the opportunity to evaluate the music therapy interventions in questionnaires and interviews. Besides that, they are encouraged to make drawings of the most important thing(s) of their experience of the music and imagery with an eye to maintaining the experience and promote inner resources that they can return to subsequently.

Besides that, the music imagery narratives (applied in both studies) are used at Cool Camp, which is the organization Livskraft´s rehabilitation camps for teenagers with cancer and siblings to children with cancer, respectively, (www.livskraftcenter.dk). Here the music imagery narratives are used in a group setting (opposed to individual sessions in the MICO project in the participants´ hospital rooms).

Like other treatments and therapies, the applied music interventions are beneficial to varying degrees in children with cancer. Below you find statements, drawings etc. by children with cancer and sibling who benefited from the music interventions.

The girl´s father also participated in the session, which he did several times during her participation in the MICO study. After the music narrative the girl makes a drawing of two persons in a boat fishing in a lake and a hot air balloon flying above the lake. In the subsequent dialogue the girl explains to music therapist that she imagined herself flying in the hot air ballon with her sister and her dog. As to the boat, she tells that she imagined fishing with her father and that she dreams of having a boat and go fishing. She continues and explains that she associates fishing with freedom, which the music narratives afforded on an inner level. The girl designates the drawing the title Freedom and tells that the most important thing in the drawing and her experience are to be together with her family and that the drawing reflects ”A lovely day” with the family.

MOR til en 9–årig pige I BEHANDLING FOR kræft/ MOTHER OF A 9–year–old girl in cancer treatment

It has been a wonderful and needed escape from reality every time the music therapist gave us a session with music imagery stories. Stress and worries disappear like dew in the sun for a while and it gives the body and brain a break to regain energy. Subsequent sleep becomes more calm after a music story

The music stories have helped me to calm down in the evening. It was also a positive thing to be able to listen to them with my siblings

“If you need a little sleep during the day, but find it hard to find peace, the music stories are a sure winner. You even sleep better and wake up more energized”.

17–ÅRIG PIGE I BEHANDLING FOR KRÆFT / 17–YEAR–OLD GIRL IN CANCER TREATMENT

Drawing by 17–year–old boy whi ended his cancer treatment in late 2017. The drawing summarises his experience with the music imagery narrative The Garden after hearing it for the first time (on Cool Camp). The boy explains that he imagined being in a wonderful woodland with a deserted and free atmosphere (which felt safe). He experienced a " very spiritual feeling due to the landscape and the altered experience of his body that felt pleasant". Besides that he commented the role of the music as follows: " I had a clear experience of the place, and that the music had a huge impact on my experience and on how the place looked was. Without the music nothing would had happened (in my imagination) ". " I think that the music narrative could be helpful for sleep induction ".

PIGE PÅ 11 ÅR I BEHANDLING FOR KRÆFT / 11–YEAR–OLD GIRL in CANCER treatment

The music narratives helped me sleep and eased the feeling of nausea during the night. It was really nice to listen to the music stories when the chemo started and, I didn´t feel the unpleasant things caused by the chemotherapy

Drawing by a 15–year–old girl, who ended 9 months of cancer treatment in 2017. The drawing summarises and shows her experience of the music narrative The Garden , which she heard (once) on Cool Camp. The girl tells that she first imagined being in a green valley with mountains. Subsequently, inspired by the music narrative, she flew on a flying carpet to a beach and landed on the sea. Here she lied on her flying carpet (on the sea) with her two dogs and enjoyed the sunset. She fell a sleep towards the end of the music narrative while imagining lying on the carpet on the sea. The girl sum up her experience with the words: The body became heavy, Warm, and Peaceful (The orange colour on the drawing is a path that connects the valley with the beach. In the valley there were also a big rock. The dark colour on the sea is the girl´s flying carpet).
